Advanced Fire Alarm System for Facebook

Fremont, California

Customer

Facebook is an American social media conglomerate corporation based in Menlo Park, California. Originated as “TheFacebook.com,” today’s Facebook is a popular global social networking website and is one of the world’s most valuable companies. It is considered one of the Big Five technology companies, along with Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and Google. Facebook offers other products and services beyond its social networking platform and has acquired Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. In the summer of 2019, the company announced a new mega-campus expansion plan in the nearby city of Fremont, estimated at about one-million square feet of office space.

Project Requirements

Facebook planned to move into an existing facility that had an outdated fire alarm system in need of upgrading. This was to ensure it met the current codes and regulations. The two-story building is 105,000 square feet with over 400 field devices.

Sciens Scope

Sciens has been working with Facebook for over 10 years and in that time has executed more than 280 projects. For this project, Sciens’ direct customer was a General Contractor called SC Builders, who we worked with to deliver a standardized fire alarm system, including voice evacuation and three pre-action systems. Added work included fire smoke dampers, distributed antenna system supervision, wireless post indicator valves and third-party testing requested by Facebook for the highly sensitive Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) area.

Outcome

With 63 buildings and over 11,000 field devices, Facebook now has a sophisticated and integrated fire alarm system that provides early indication of an emergency event, while giving vital location information to first responders.

This helps keep the thousands of employees and visitors to this vast campus each day, safe, and out of harms way. Sciens annual testing and maintenance across the entire site ensures the buildings and systems remain code-compliant and fully responsive to any alarm condition.
